Automatic Coffee Machine
For many people, there’s nothing better than waking up to the aroma of fresh, hot coffee in the morning. The automatic coffee machine, also known as a coffeemaker, is a device that can brew coffee in amounts ranging from a cup or two to an entire pot that serves several cups.
The modern coffeemaker traces its American origin to about the mid-nineteenth century when American cowboys developed a device to brew coffee over a campfire. In 1890, the Manning-Bowman Company began distributing a machine that brewed coffee by percolation, a process where liquid seeped through a filter that trapped the ground coffee beans, which was the forerunner of the modern brewing process.
In 1972, Mr. Coffee, the first automatic drip coffeemaker designed for household use, was introduced to the marketplace. Mr. Coffee’s convenience and ease of cleaning quickly gained popularity. The device was also noted for its celebrity pitchman, baseball legend Joe DiMaggio. In 1977, Mr. Coffee proved to be adaptable to changing consumer demand when its makers unveiled a new version that brewed coffee using fewer grounds in response to a worldwide coffee shortage
Today’s coffeemaker is fairly simple to operate. A common method involves opening the top of the unit and pouring a desired amount of water into a reservoir. A paper filter is placed into a tray that is then filled with a measured amount of ground coffee. A flick of a switch or the activation of a preset timer ignites the heating element. The heated water passes from a tube and through the ground coffee, which “drips” through the filer into the waiting glass coffee pot.
Coffeemakers are now available in a variety of shapes, styles and colors that allow the coffee drinker to purchase a unit that blends with her kitchen décor. With the popularity of coffee showing no signs of waning, the automatic coffee machine should continue to be a kitchen staple for years to come.
